Dahlia: Hot, Loud and Proud

July 30, 2010

Garden blogger Noel from A Plant Fanatic in Hawaii challenges us to find the Hottest, Loudest, and Proudest flora.  Quick thanks to the Conservatory of Flowers for their seasonal gardens.  Can I get a holla for these fine Dahlias?

You pick ’em.  Which is the 1) hottest, 2) loudest, 3) proudest?

Here is my pick for proudest.

They have palatable names too…unlike some frou frou names of plants we won’t mention.

So there you have it.  Here is a quick overview of the Dahlia garden.  They are going to get a lot taller.  These guys put out a lot of foliage and flowers.  The gardener’s technique is to trim the small and week branches and flowers in order to get tall and soccer ball sized flowers.

We are teaching our first classes today at Workshop, DIY Terrariums and Staghorn Fern mounting.  Wish us success.

    aloha,

i love dahlia season at the park….i wish i could see those in person, one of favorite things to do this time of the year in GG…i agree the hottest one there is the spanish dancer, it is such a great contrast.

i wish i could grow dahlias in my neck of the woods, its just to wet for them, they just rot :(

Wow! These dahlias are amazing! I have tried in vain to grow these here where I live, to no avail. Don’t know why.

Gorgeous!! And I wish I coulda gone to your class today, but on account of I just got back from a Nicaraguan vacay and I live in Austin, TX–you can see my dilemma. I just bought my first staghorn about a month ago and haven’t mounted it yet. At the eco-hotel where I stayed in Nicaragua, they had a ton of them mounted on the outside walls, so it got my juices going again!

New to your site and I love it!

wonderful blooms – we grow them here too only I don’t have any in my garden this year. Western Spanish Dancer is my favourite amongst them all.

Hi i am new here! I don’t think there is still a contest after showing all those magnificent dahlias. Not only are the breeds lovely but the photos’ composition and DOF are superbly displayed. Wonderful. To top them all, the garden is also a work of art…I am now hesitant to post mine. hehe. thanks.
